Why are tournaments rated?

The people who play them do it more for the tickets than the points and are typically rated 1400-1700. Anyone with a high rating 2000+ has to make a huge points overlay thereby discouraging them from playing. Seems like unrated tournaments would increase parcipitation.

I don't think that most players care about points. There are some on here that seem 2b proud of their high rating with their losing stats. High ratings don't put beans and weenies on the table.
Ladder points and rankings all that matters.

WELL SAID B500B... YOU ARE CORRECT.. WE TD's HAVE TRIED SETTING SPECIFIC "NON RATED" TOURNAMENTS FOR A WHILE NOW.. BUT HAVE HAD NO RESPONSE FROM THE HIGH POINT RATED PLAYERS. THOUGH IT WOULD MAKE SENSE THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO JOIN WITHOUT JEOPARDIZING THEIR COVETED RATINGS.. IT HAS NOT HAPPENED.

Flannery, playing in multi-player tournaments is easy. If you are using a computer, they are the first thing that you see on your screen, and appear like this: Start Time Pending Entry Fee Cash Prize Starts in Aug 7 2025 8 0pm EST 125 PT SETTERS CHOICE 7 TIX W/PEARLE Single elim. 125 points 7 Tickets Calculate 1hrs 53min 00sec Aug 7 2025 9 0pm EST HR 100 REG(LD) DBL ELIM. 15 TIX. W/MAB Dbl elim. 100 points 15 Tickets Calculate 2hrs 53min 00sec
If you are using your phone to play, choose your game and once in the main lobby area, there is a menu button. Click on it, and there is an icon of a trophy cup that says: Tourneys etc. Click on that and you will navigate to the upcoming tournaments sorted by next available. It will list the Date, and Time of the Tournament (USA Eastern time), the tournament director hosting the tournament and the format. SE means single elimination and is generally lower tix to enter. DE means you must lose twice and are generally slightly more expensive, as they take more time. HR means a high-roller tournament and those are always DE. Cribbage typically offers over 10 tournaments per day, Gin typically about 5 or so and Backgammon is variable. The times and dates and formats are varied to attract a variety of players. Typically, you can find 3-6 Tix SE's numerous times per week, depending on TD's availability. There are always at least two HR's in Cribbage per day, and one HR in Gin per day. TD's are volunteers from all over the world that love the game and hosting for players. You can also calculate the expected $prize payouts on these pages by plugging in the number of players and the Tix entry fee. Great question and we hope to see you in a multi-player tournament soon mate!

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!.
According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!). The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
